August 20th is the most wonderful day in Iceland, for the annual Iceland “Night of Culture” was held on that day. It also coincided with the fifth anniversary of Harper. Various theatres from Russia, Hungary, Germany and Iceland have been performed in Harper. In the morning, street bands began to play northern European music, which opened the curtain for this culture festival. “Three Monks” is the only Chinese repertoire that was invited, and will be performed twice in Harper.
Local time in Iceland seven o’clock in August 20th, “Three Monks” completed stage setting up and light adjustment. By nine o’clock, all the actors got ready and rehearsed. There were eight hundred seats in all in Silfurberg theatre. Silfurberg means “a jewel that can only be found in Iceland”. It is a theatre that can accommodate more than eight hundred people and be used as theatre, conference and concert. On the first floor, we saw the posters and scrolls of “Three Monks” and they were taken home by our enthusiastic audience.
At 1pm, the first show of “Three Monks” began. Chinese ambassador to Iceland, Mr. Zhang Weidong and his wife, Ms. Zhou Saixing, Harper Hall & Conference Center Director Mr. Halldór Guemundsson, the Iceland national theatre director Mr. Tórhallur Siguresson, China and Iceland Friendship Association Ms. Unnur Guojonsdottir, president of Richard Wagner Society Ms. Selma Gudmundsdottir, vice director from the Ministry of Culture Ms. Zhao Xinshu, vice president of CNTC Mr. Yang Fan watched the show together. During the show, children were fascinated by the music, light effect, and plots of “Three Monks”.
After the show, Mr. Zhang Weidong came up to stage with all staffs and expressed his congratulations. He said, “It is not that easy to see Chinese performing troupe in Iceland. “Three Monks” is rich in philosophy, and is widely known in China. It is a great repertoire that can convey Chinese culture to foreign countries. Hope that more great performance will come to Iceland again. ” Mr. Zhang also invited everyone to visit the embassy.
After less than four hours to rest, at 6pm, the second performance of “Three Monks” started. The eight hundred seats Silfurberg Theatre was occupied and full of laughter. Even some of the audience stood at the entrance to enjoy the show. After the show, young audiences in Iceland came up to stage and took group pictures with our actors. Parents raised their cameras and cell phones to record this memorable moment. In the cheers of the audience, “Three Monks” in Iceland completed successfully.
