The Moomins is a family of white, roundish fairy tale characters with large snouts. The musical starts with the carefree and adventurous family spending a day's life in their house in Moominvalley.

Having received a report from his minister that the Moomins don't have to follow any laws and live happily, the King, who lives in a castle far away, has decided to visit the valley and tame the family to be well-behaved. But in the end, the king surrendered himself to the happy mood of the Moominvalley and shook off his plan to change and discipline them.

Zhang Yan is the musical's Chinese director.

"When the Finnish director Marcus Groth first arrived, he said the drama aims to convey the fact that a thing like happiness, is paramount. A wealthy life and a successful career are not important at all. In the month I spent with my actors and actresses, 20 days were spent on rehearsing singing songs. As a director, I accompanied them to sing songs every day in a bid to make these melodies an integral part of the drama."

To impress audiences with the Moomins' happy mood, a total of 11 Tove Jansson's original Moomin fairy-tale songs are all retained to develop characters and advance the plot.

Meanwhile, the China National Theatre for Children uses its orchestra to play live on the stage as part of this drama. This is the second endeavor of this type following The Emperor's New Clothes, a performance given by the theatre over two decades ago.

Cheng Jin is music producer for "King in Moominvalley".

"Despite the Chinese dub of the Moomins, we wanted it to adhere loyally to the original works by retaining the European's folk song style. In order to achieve this purpose, we've chosen four orchestras, which include violin, bass cello, and keyboard-based instruments like piano and accordion, as well as percussion."

In addition to all these beautiful melodies, the story of "King in Moominvalley" is also interestingly thought-provoking as director Zhang Yan explains:

"The drama is an open-ended story, which conveys a philosophy that we should learn to respect others' differences. In the drama, the imaginary beings in the Moomin world all have a large snout, which make them a minority group. Then the king demands them take off their snout, which is incorrectly narrow-minded."

The theatre play King in Moominvalley is based on the original TV series, which Tove Jansson and her brother Lars Jansson wrote for the Swedish public service television in 1969.

The China National Theatre for Children told the media at the premiere that they introduce this play from Finland also aiming to mark the 64th anniversary of bilateral ties between China and Finland.

"King in Moominvalley" begins to meet local audience members in Beijing on Wednesday and stays available till January of 2016.
